Doing a little retro photography with a point and shoot at Big Sky today. Winds were gusting at 40+ so most of the mountain was on wind hold. But we got in a full day for riding anyway. This really is a big mountain!
I'll be taking a photo a day for the next year and place the images on this blog. This is a way for me to become a better photographer and will force me to dig deeper to expand my vision.

Day 316
I’ve shot this wind mill before but this has a totally different feeling to it. Lately, I’ve been feeling like I’ve just been reshooting the same things over again so I tried to shoot this in totally different way. Now, looking at this I really wish I would have taken one or two steps to the left so to center the windmill blades between the trees. Hindsight is 20/20.
I’m really looking forward to spending the next week in Montana. A change of scenery will do me a world of good.

Day 315
50 days and counting! I’ve shot this greenhouse at Ste. Michelle Winery a couple of times now but after 315 days it’s getting harder to come up with new things to shoot. The snow is something you wouldn’t normally see on this greenhouse so it’s fairly unique.

Day 314
There's a winter storm warning today in the Seattle area so I’m keeping an eye on the weather. I’m picking Michele up at the airport later this afternoon and it’s looking like a snowy drive. Hoping to pick her up and get home before the conditions get too bad.

Day 313
For awhile it was looking like Seattle was going to have an early Spring. But with a cold front coming thru and snowflakes in the air, it was a reminder that we are still far from any Summertime activities.

Day 310
When I look at this photo I think of the Dylan lyrics “Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.” It was a bit winding when I took the dogs for a little hike today and took this.

Day 309
I really wanted to make it easy on myself and use a tripod for a couple selfies down by the lake today. But as I was gearing up at the truck I realized I forgot the quick release plate that attaches the camera to the tripod, major fail! I went ahead anyway and found different places to prop the camera and use my remote control to take the photo. After a half hour of thoroughly disappointing shots I took a break and sat down at a picnic table. When I put the camera down on the table the composition of the tree that was displayed on the live view screen jumped out at me. I quickly captured a couple of photos to gage the exposure, tweaked the composition and jumped into the scene. I believe my muse was giving me hints again today!

Day 308
Seems like every fine art photographer has this type of image in their portfolio. So here is my obligatory pier photo. Now I call myself a fine art photographer.

Day 307
I’m totally convinced that my muse has now returned to me and I may have even met her today during my photo walk along the lake. I shot so many good photos today that it was really hard to choose one. Which seems like good evidence that my muse has returned.
I chose this one out of the bunch because it symbolized the stage I’m currently at in my P365, I’ve reached the summit and sprinting toward the finish. This is actually a wonderful sculpture on the shore of Lake Washington at a park in downtown Kirkland. The sun was shinning and it was a beautiful day to meet my muse.

Day 305
This is a shot at Ste. Michelle in the rain today. I bought a rain cover for my camera to use this weekend and never got the chance to use it. As I pulled into the Ste Michelle parking lot I noticed this man in the vineyard clipping the vines and he was wearing this great yellow slicker. It just seemed like a perfect for a great photo. So I parked the car, snuggled my camera inside it’s rain cover and took a walk in the pouring rain with the confidence that my camera was safe and dry inside my new waterproof cover.

Day 302
I took this shot for my wife’s Valentine card this year. She really loves it when I create personal cards for her. This is a surprise so please don’t tell her. She normally just checks my shot of the day on Facebook so I think it’s safe to say that she won’t see it on here.

Day 301
There’s something about this photo that brings back some great memories of sharing a few beers with friends on a sunny Winter day back in Milwaukee. This was taken at Malt and Vine in Redmond today and I actually didn’t even have a beer but this really triggered a memory. I really like the idea of photographing to remember. Not necessarily recording images now to remember something later but taking pictures to recall memories stored away in the back of your mind. Michele always says I remember the strangest things. Maybe it’s because I’ve always taken mental pictures and store them away in the back of my mind just waiting to be recalled with my digital camera. OK, maybe a little too deep but this all came from one simple photo I took during lunch.

Day 300
Milestone date! 65 days left! I saw this guy unloading his boat as I was leaving Denny Park and turned around to take a couple of pictures. I walked up to ask him if it would be OK. He said yes and asked me to help him carry his boat down to the lake. So I had to work a little bit for this shot.
Day 299
I wasn’t going to use this but after taking a second look I’m pretty happy with this shot. The reason I wasn’t going to use it was I had to do some Photoshop magic to make this work. The original shot had this bird’s head facing forward so you couldn’t see his face. But I took some photos of this same bird in a different pose seconds later and it’s head was turned towards the camera. So I just lopped off the bird’s head in the second shot and placed it on this body. This is only the second shot out of almost 300 that I had to use Photoshop to save so I don’t feel too bad for breaking my own rule.

Day 298
Although this looks like it was captured during sunset, it was actually taken during midday. It was partly cloudy with sun breaks but as I got to this beach the clouds rolled and it became mostly overcast. I tried to take advantage of a shaded foreground and a sunlit background.

Day 296
While waiting for a stage performance to start I noticed this person’s feet sitting a couple of seats down from me. I really liked the gesture in the way he had his feet crossed and the multiple shadows on the floor were a nice lighting effect. Because it was relatively dim in the theater I had to rest the camera on my leg to stabilize it while I took a couple of shots. The second after I snapped the second shot he moved and the gesture and the moment were gone.

Day 295
I’m totally embracing the over-processing now. These are turkey feathers that I’m using as a compositional tool and I’m not trying to hide the processing. I could really see this as a fine art series of photos.

Day 294
This one of the four dragonfly sculptures on the 145th St. walking bridge near Red Hook Brewery in Woodinville. The overcast day helped this image by keeping the light soft and shadow less. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned thru this P365 is to use the lighting you’re given and make the best of it. Also, I’m so pleased with the development settings of this image I’ve saved the settings as a preset in Lightroom, I call it “Nostalgic Dragonfly”. I like the overall rust colored cast with a contrasting warm green accent.

Day 293
My objective this week was to get back to basics, shoot JPEGs and do minimum amount of processing. I totally threw that away after just two days and over-processed the daylights out of this photo. The light was so wonderful today and I was getting some really nice rim lighting around Noelle’s head, I just had to go overboard and make this shot really stand out. It would have worked without the over the top processing but it’s so much better like this!

Day 292
I took this at a Ultimate Frisbee game during lunch today. This is one of my favorite game to play but I’m so out of shape right now that I had much more fun shooting the action from the sidelines. This is my very first time shooting any type of fact action, running type of sporting action and it was really exciting. It took me a little while to get a feel for what to shoot because I didn’t want to just spray and pray. I was trying to capture the moment right before the action. This worked really well because if I missed the shot I would actually get the action. I really like the simplicity of this shot which I think helps with the epic feeling I trying for.
